The Effect of Flupentixol and Flupentixol-decanoate in the Treatment of Schizophrenia

Abstract
|
|
|
The antipsychotic effect of fluphentixol and fluphentixol-decanoate were studied for 6 weeks. The subjects consisted of 32 inpatients who fulfilled the DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia. The clinical effects were evaluated and compared every second, fourth and sixth week by means of `Brief psychiatric Rating Scale´ and `Hamilton´s Rating Scale for Depression´ and also side effects were investigated.
The results revealed that in fluphentixol, total BPRS Score, the mean score of almost all item of BPRS and HAM-D score were significantly reduced after 4 weeks after treatment. And side effects were not significant change except temor. In flupentixol-decanoate, it was treated with 13 among 32 schizophrenic inpatients for another 6 weeks after 6 weeks treatment with flupentixal P.O., total BPRS score, the mean score of almost all item of BPRS and HAM-D score were not significantly changed. And anther side effects were not found.
So, we suggest that fluphentixol is effective drug for the treatment of schizophrenia and fluphentixol-decanoate is effective drug for the maintenance therapy of schizophrenics.
